Modern Languages Courses for IP

Registering for Modern Language Courses

Choosing the Appropriate Language Course

If you are beginning the study of a language for the first time, you may register for any open 1001 section. If you are continuing your study of Chinese, French, German, Japanese, Russian, or Spanish from high school, then you must take our online placement test before registering for a language course. You can take the test at http://www.modlangs.gatech.edu/student-resources/placement-tests.

The test will give you a score; compare this score to the chart on the Placement Test homepage: this indicates into which course/level you should try to register. Please email a copy of your placement test score to internationalplan@oie.gatech.edu for our records.

Permits in Modern Language Courses

During the first week of Phase I registration, major restrictions are in place for all SPAN courses and some FREN courses. Students who have been accepted to the IP may request permits to enroll in these restricted courses; these permits are not guaranteed and will be issued on an individual basis to the extent possible. (For ARBC, CHIN, GRMN, JAPN, KOR, or RUSS courses, you do not need a permit to register.) Also, International Plan students are given priority to register for courses that are full. For full courses, you should submit an overload request. To request a permit or overload request:

  1. Review the information on http://www.modlangs.gatech.edu/permit-and-overload-requests
  2. Complete the Permit/Overload form online.
  3. Once you have submitted it, please give at least 24 hours for approval.
  4. If you are approved, you will receive an email with instructions to register.
